When you purchase a vehicle from an individual (private party), you are responsible for completing a vehicle title transfer within 30 days of the notary date.

You will need to bring the following to the Title Office:

  • Original Title assigned to the buyer
  • Application(s) for Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle (BMV form 3774)
  • A government-issued driver’s license or state ID card
  • An out-of-state VIN inspection (for out-of-state titles ONLY)
  • Sales tax on the purchase price (buyer is responsible for paying sales tax)
  • Payment for title fees, including a lien holder notation (if applicable)

Do not fill in any part of the Title unless it is done in the presence of a Notary Public or other duly authorized officer with power to administer oaths.  All signatures must be notarized.  If two names are to appear on the Title, both signatures are required for all transactions in the State of Ohio.  It is required that a State I.D. or Ohio License be presented to the Title Bureau at the time of transfer.  Your Certificate of Title must be procured within 30 days after the assignment, or you will be subject to the late fee of $5.00 which must be paid at the time the title is issued.

The certificate of title will become null and void if there are any alterations or erasures and a replacement title will have to be obtained.
